Tourist Season 2010 ~ 2011
The new running season has got away to a late shaky start
due to the events that surrounded the end of the last 2009 – 2010 season which
unfolded at the end of May. While the end of the season was anticipating a
fairly routine strip down to access the boiler for inspection and look at
replacing the boiler tubes, the results proved to be much worse than expected
and poor old Wee Georgie Wood Steam Tram had to be withdrawn from service to a
date yet to be announced. The boiler was
found to be in worse condition than was first thought, now while the body lays
in parts on the loco shed floor and the boiler else where waiting engineering
and quotes on the cost to fix it, other restoration work will carry on till it
is all put back together again. While the off season was used to clean and
restore other parts of the steam loco the organization went forth to secure an
other locomotive to fill the gap until Wee Georgie Wood could return to the
track.
Now that the Wee Georgie Wood Steam Railway advise that the
following withdrawal of the Wee Georgie Wood due to boiler concerns, they have
now recommission the historic Romeo mechanical locomotive on lease from the
West Coast Pioneers Museum in Zeehan and formally used on the Lake Margaret
Tramway up until 1964. While WGWSR Inc. also owns a former Lake Margaret
carriage it is an opportunity to see another piece of West Coast of Tasmania
History being displayed. A lot of work getting the mechanical and driving
idiosyncrasies just right before getting the necessary paperwork and
registrations in place to drive with passengers has been carried out and the
season started on January 10th 2011.
However the organization will be focused on raising the
money which will be needed to build a new boiler for the Fowler Tram in the
next year, the task will not be an easy one where a substantial amount of
finance will be needed. Meanwhile the
hard working committee are now putting the finishing touches to a business plan
which will help plan out the coming future and give much needed direction for
this heritage icon.
Please view our running day dates for the remainder of this
season and if your in the area please come for a ride and experience the
nostalgia of riding on a piece of West
Coast living history.
